Christmas Bird Count

CBC started out with dense fog!

The 2006 CBC had a slow start - dense fog at Fort Gibson Lake until 10:00 a.m.!  Nevertheless, our dedicated participants
persevered.  After the fog burned off, the species list increased dramatically!

Participants included Jeri McMahon, Jim Winner, Jim Harman, Tom Alford, Al & Phyllis Mutzig, Jay Isbell, Elsie Stubbs, Vera
Jennings, Ken Williams, Jim Deming, Rose Reasoner, Bill & Kelly Godley, Bill Clark, Kona Tackett, & David Dyer.

Jeri McMahon, CBC Compiler, reports:

"Our Ft. Gibson CBC was held on December 23rd, and we had dense fog for 2 1/2 hours in the morning.  Couldn't see a thing!!
But we pushed on, and had a good count the rest of the day.  We had 9 teams, all with excellent birders, and came up with 100
species for the total count."

"Birds of interest were: 1 Sandhill Crane, 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 60 Least Sandpipers, 2 Rough-legged
Hawks, 7 Eastern Phoebes, 10 sparrow species, including 7 LeConte's, and 4 wren species, including a House Wren.  Birds
missed were: Common Grackle, Wilson's Snipe, Spotted Towhee (we did get an Eastern Towhee), Northern Bobwhite, Wild
Turkey, Herring Gull, and some ducks - Canvasback, Redhead, Common Goldeneye, and Ruddy Duck.  The Pine Warbler was
missed at Sequoyah State Park."

"The fog really put us behind, so we didn't get to cover every single area, but we did the best we could with 16 participants.  Thanks
to all who participated, and helped with the tally at my house afterwards.  A good time was had by all."

"It is imperative to maintain portions of the wilderness
untouched so that a tree will rot as it falls, a waterfall will pour
its curve without generating electricity, a trumpeter swan may
float on uncontaminated water - and moderns may at least
see what their ancestors knew in their nerves and blood."
