About the Christmas Bird Counts

Indian Nations Audubon Society sponsors and/or participates in four Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) in December of each year.  We
hope you will consider participating in at least one, as this is a great way to learn about the bird species and their habitats in
eastern Oklahoma.  These Christmas Bird Counts are listed on the
Activities page each year.

Indian Nations Audubon Society is involved in four Christmas Bird Counts, as noted below.  Results will be posted when available.

Fort Gibson Lake (Cherokee, Muskogee, & Wagoner counties)
Lake Atoka (Coal & Atoka counties)
Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge (south of Vian, OK)
Broken Bow (Broken Bow, OK & Broken Bow Lake areas)

2006 was the
107th Christmas Bird Count season and is sponsored by the National Audubon Society, Cornell University Lab of
Ornithology, Natural Resources Conservation Service, et. al.  This is a "Citizen Science" project that is a way for you to connect with
the natural world through fun activities that generate vital information for the conservation of birds (and other wildlife).

This partnership benefits us all: you will learn about birds by taking part in these science-based activities, and Audubon's science
staff gains invaluable information.  Most importantly, the birds benefit because it helps Audubon focus on those birds and habitats
that need our help most.

Birds are a critical indicator of the sustainability and viability of ecosystems.  This multi-continental effort provides vital information
regarding the health of ecosystems.  Last year's 106th CBC included 2,060 "count circles", just like the four listed above that Indian
Nations Audubon Society will be participating in.  There are now 50,000+ participants, just like
you, in North America, Central
America, South America, Caribbean Sea islands, and Pacific Ocean islands.  The CBC has grown to include areas from above the
Arctic Circle to the waters of the Drake Passage off Tierra del Fuego.  Even more CBC count circles and participants are expected
this year!

Goals of the Christmas Bird Counts

Engage citizens in gathering  information (about bird species and the sustainability & viability of their habitats through a census).

Empower citizens to take action on behalf of places important to them and important to wildlife.

Foster a new culture of conservation.
